Housing affordability top priority in provincial throne speech

Premier David Eby’s throne speech, read by Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin, opened the fourth session of the forty-second parliament on February 6, 2023 with a focus on housing affordability.
The speech outlines the government's blueprint for the coming year.
Here are the highlights.
Housing affordability
In the year ahead, the province promises:
- major new investments to deliver more housing near transit hubs for middle class families;
- to launch a refreshed housing plan;
- to speed approvals for housing permits;
- to invest $500 million in a new Rental Protection Fund;
- to make major new investments to increase housing and services near public transit hubs; and
- in the fall session, after working with local governments, homebuilders and communities, to introduce new laws to turn the housing strategy into new affordable homes.
Other promises
The government also promises to:
- introduce new laws to protect residents from speculators, money launderers, and organized crime;
- create new response teams to track, arrest and jail repeat violent offenders; and
- continue to invest in fighting climate change by growing a cleaner economy.
Provincial budget
The provincial budget will be released on February 28, 2023.
