Social media is ubiquitous in modern life. and no social media platform has more influence and reach than Facebook.

Because of this reach, Facebook is today’s scammer’s platform of choice. The best defense against these nefarious actors is the ability to recognize their schemes.

To help you stay one step ahead, here are the three most Facebook scams cyber criminals are using right now.

“Who has viewed your profile?” scam

Cyber criminals want to install malware on your device and will devise creative ways to do so. In this scam, the criminal will buy an ad, post on your wall, and send you a message or comment on your post with a link that claims you can see who has viewed your profile. These posts will sometimes even come from trusted friends whose accounts may have already been compromised. If you click this link, you risk exposing your device to malware and your account to malicious actors. Always be wary of links on Facebook.

Fake videos

Scammers will use links to fake videos to try to trick you into installing malware on your device. These fake videos typically have salacious or unbelievable titles, and link to external sites that appear to be legitimate. They may even try to emulate big streaming sites like YouTube. If you click on one of these links, your device will be infected. If you see a video link that you want to watch, use Google to see if the video exists on a legitimate platform.

Fake profiles

Scammers use social engineering to extract personal information from you. Social engineering is when a scammer manipulates you into trusting them. Facebook is rife with social engineering scams because of its social nature. Scammers will use fake profiles to trick you into contacting them. You might not even be the ultimate target– interacting with friends of a potential target is an easy way for fake profiles to look legitimate. Be cautious of profiles you don’t know. Ignore friend requests from people you don’t know, even if they’re already a friend of someone on your friends list, until you can verify their identity.
