Metro Vancouver families – home alone, roommates and multi-generational
Living alone
More Metro Vancouver residents are living alone, in apartments. In 2021, twelve per cent or 303,030 of a total of 2,607,010 Metro Vancouver adults aged 15 and older, lived alone.
Most one-person households (68 per cent) lived in an apartment—either in a building with fewer than five storeys or a building with five or more storeys.
In contrast, the majority of households with two or more residents were in single-detached houses (87 per cent).
Roommates
- Households composed of roommates—two or more individuals living together, none of which are part of a census family—increased by 41% from 2011 to 2021.
- Roommates are the fastest growing household type.
Multi-generations
- 100,775 or 9.65% of Metro Vancouver households in 2021 had multiple generations, two or more families, or one family living with additional persons.
- These households have grown by 15,530 households or 18% since 2011.
Income – Metro Vancouver
North Vancouver District households had the highest income in the region in 2021 at $123,000, followed by Port Moody and Maple Ridge. Richmond had the lowest income.
